What’s Releasing In 2021 On Disney+? Everything You Should Be Excited For
When Disney+ first rolled out, it instantly gave Netflix and Hulu a run for their money. It’s been a few months since then, and it’s clear that the platform has a bright future ahead. The platform is planning on increasing this momentum by releasing a multitude of shows this year.
Arguably, the most anticipated is Season 2 of The Mandalorian. After all, it’s the show that got them the most attention.
So, what exactly is Disney+ releasing this year? Let’s take a look at the hottest shows in the Disney plus lineup for this year.
January 2021
Lamp Life
Lamp Life is a spin-off of the Toy Story franchise. It’s a short movie that runs for 7 minutes and revolves around Bo Peep.
It touches on the events that take place between Toy Story 2 and 4 and focuses on the character’s whereabouts during this period.
The short was written and directed by Valerie LaPointe, a script supervisor on Toy Story 4.
If you’re expecting Tom Hanks as Woody, get ready to be disappointed. He’s not in the movie. Instead, his brother, Jim Hanks, voices his character.
Lamp Life was one of the first Disney plus shows to release this year, entering the platform on the 21st of January, 2021.
Short Circuit: Experimental Films
The series showcases multiple stories, pitched by countless animators at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. The series is Disney’s attempt at being more supportive of their ideas, which is why it consists of various stories and art styles.
The series has 14 episodes. It was released on January 24th, 2021.
February 2021
Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made
If you’re a fan of kids’ movies, you’ll love Timmy Failure. It’s based on the novel and revolves around a 11-year-old boy and his imaginary polar bear. He believes that he’s the best detective in town, which leads to a lot of adventure.
The movie premiered at the Sundance festival on January 25th, 2021, and was released on Disney+ on Feb 7th.
March 2021
Star Girl
Star Girl’s release is approaching. It’s set to air on March 13, 2021. The film revolves around Grace VanderWaal who plays the titular character. ‘Star Girl’ is the new, weird kid in school, who was homeschooled her entire life. The movie is about her adapting to her new environment, and her love affair with Leo, played by Graham Verchere.
August 2021
Falcon And The Winter Soldier
The series continues with the MCU and picks up after The Avengers: Endgame. From the MCU, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprise their roles as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, respectively.
The series was confirmed in early 2019 and began filming in October of that year.
It will grace the screens in August, and contain 6 episodes. The episodes won’t be released all at once, but weekly.
In terms of its premise, it focuses on what happens after Captain America gives The Winter Soldier his mantle. The Falcon joins forces with him, and the show records their adventures.
October 2021
The Mandalorian (Season 2)
Arguably, The Mandalorian is what made Disney+ so popular. The show takes place 5 years after The Return Of The Jedi, and 25 years before The Force Awakens. It revolves around the bounty hunter, the Mandalorian, and how he protects the ‘The Child’.
Since it’s one of the best-loved Disney+ shows, it’s great to know that the series will be released in October of this year.
December 2021
WandaVision
There is another Marvel series in the works. WandaVision is based off the Scarlet witch, and like the Falcon And The Winter Soldier, will follow the MCU.
The movie takes place after End Game and sees Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles as the Scarlet Witch and Wanda Maximoff, respectively.
The series began filming in November 2019 and wrapped up in March this year.
It’ll be released in December 2021 and have 6 episodes. Like The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, both series would have their episodes released weekly.
Unknown Date, 2021
When you look at the Disney plus full list, a lot of their shows don’t have release dates. However, given below are the hottest ones:
Lizzie McGuire
Although Disney+ teased the reboot, there have been a lot of problems in paradise. The streaming platform has stalled the series as of now, and unfortunately, we don’t know if it will launch this year. Fans are hopeful though.
The Phineas & Ferb Movie: Candace Against the Universe
This cartoon was iconic, which is why Disney+ decided to bring it back to life. They aren’t rebooting the TV show. Instead, they’re giving the series a movie.
The movie is about two characters rescuing their sister, Candace from Aliens. As a result, they travel between galaxies, which makes for an epic adventure.
It isn’t the first Phineas & Ferb movie to come out and is most likely not the last.
Although we don’t know much about it, the platform has stated it’ll be released somewhere this summer.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: Season 2
The world wasn’t ready for the High School Musical series when it first came out. It revolved around a new set of characters and their escapades at East High, the same school where the movie took place.
Season 2 is confirmed to have 12 episodes. However, we’re not sure when it’ll be aired. It has been speculated that this will take place at the end of this year, but it’s too early to say.
Dolphin Reef
Compared to our line up so far, Dolphin Reef is a bit different. It’s a Disneynature documentary series about marine life, focusing mainly on Dolphins.
It’s not the first nature documentary Disney has released. So far, there have been fourteen such documentaries under the Disneynature label, and Dolphin Reef is one of the best.
The documentary isn’t original Disney plus content. It was released in March 2018. It will be launched on the platform this year.
The Muppets Now
The Muppets Now will be released sometime this year. Disney+ has confirmed this, but an actual date wasn’t given. The series is said to star the amazing cast of The Muppets and will be unscripted. It will have three parts which include The game show, Cooking show and Talk show.
Elephant
Disney teased this documentary in its trailer of what’s in the works for 2021. Other than that, we don’t know very much about it.
Secret Society of Second Born Royals
The movie focuses on Sam, the Princess Of Illyria and her time at a secret training program, where she’s set to save the world.
Although we don’t know when it’ll come out, the movie wrapped up filming on June 29th, 2019.
Conclusion
If you look at the Disney plus list, the number of great shows coming out this year is enough to make fans super excited. The above entries are the most anticipated, but countless more movies and shows will be available as well. Although not all of them are Disney+ originals, many of them are Disney classics.
So, if you were wondering what is on Disney+ this year, well now you know!
